Context: These Happy Golden Years

Almanzo Wilder was a poor musician, but he knew that the way to Laura's heart was through music.

So when Mr. Clewett held a singing school, Almanzo paid the tuition for both of them, picked up Laura each day with his buggy & Barnum (the horse), and brought her home at the end of each class.

Historical background on the singing school held in De Smet, South Dakota, in February through April, 1884. (a separate website)

This is the way that Laura chose to have us experience it....

These Happy Golden Years page 211

Laura loved singing school. It began with singing scales to limber up the voices. Then Mr. Clewett taught them a simple exercise, the first in the book. He gave them the pitch with his tuning fork again and again, until all their voices chimed in. Then thy sang.
Gaily now our boat is sailing,
O'er the blue and sparkling wave.
Here's a reproduction of page 7 of The Conqueror, the book used by Mr. Clewett to teach the class.
